Beyond the Introduction
Objectivist Epistemology, Perceptual Induction, and the Embodied Mind
A comparative essay on Ayn Rand, George Lakoff, and Mark Johnson

I. The Unfinished Introduction
Ayn Rand’s Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology remains, more than half a century after its serialization, the central statement of the Objectivist theory of concepts.[1] It is also, by its own title and by the subsequent history of the school, an introduction. Rand solved, to her own satisfaction and that of her closest students, the problem of universals. She showed how a mind that begins with particulars can form open-ended classifications without either Platonic essences or nominalist conventions. She identified the axioms of existence, identity, and consciousness, and she tied their validation to direct awareness. What she did not do—what she did not claim to do—was to describe in any detail the structure of the perceptual awareness on which that validation rests, or the evolutionary history that made such awareness possible.
Since that time, official Objectivist epistemology has been refined, applied, and defended. It has not been substantially rebuilt from below. Meanwhile a different research program, working from linguistics, experimental psychology, and the biology of the body, has been mapping the very region Rand left sketched: the preconceptual organization of experience. George Lakoff’s Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things[2] and George Lakoff and Mark Johnson’s Metaphors We Live By[3] are the two books in which that program first became philosophically explicit. They were written without any detailed engagement with Rand. Their authors use the word “objectivism” for a target that is not her system. Even so, their findings bear on her questions with a precision that later Objectivist literature has rarely matched. They describe two kinds of structure in preconceptual experience—basic-level, image-based generalizations, and kinesthetic image-schematic structure—and they argue that these structures exist because bodies of our kind evolved to act in a world of our kind.
The thesis of this essay is not that Lakoff and Johnson are crypto-Objectivists, nor that Rand secretly anticipated conceptual metaphor theory. It is that her metaphysics of direct awareness and her theory of concept-formation as measurement-omission leave an explanatory gap at the level of perceptual structure; that cognitive science has been filling that gap by observation of biological systems and lived activity; and that the results, read carefully, enhance, illuminate, and expand Objectivist epistemology. The axioms remain what Rand said they were: identifications of primary facts, implicit in every act of awareness. What can now be added is an account of how a living body is so configured that those facts are available to it as perceptual inductions, shared in outline with other animals, and then recast, in the human case, as explicit concepts.
II. What Rand Established
Consciousness as identification
Rand begins from a fact she treats as both metaphysical and epistemological: consciousness is not a passive mirror and not a creator of its contents. It is the faculty of perceiving that which exists, and it is an active process.[4] Sensation, perception, and conception are degrees of the same function—identification—carried out by different means. The senses are valid because they are causal: existents act on sense organs, and the resulting awareness is awareness of those existents, not of substitutes. Perception automatically integrates the several modalities into a single, coherent experience of entities in a world. Conceptual cognition then integrates those entities into open-ended classes.
Axiomatic concepts and perceptual givenness
The base of the system is not a set of propositions but a set of axiomatic concepts: existence, identity, and consciousness.[5] An axiomatic concept, Rand writes, “is the identification of a primary fact of reality, which cannot be analyzed, i.e., reduced to other facts or broken into component parts. It is implicit in all facts and in all knowledge. It is the fundamentally given and directly perceived or experienced, which requires no proof or explanation, but on which all proofs and explanations rest.”[6] One does not prove that existence exists. One looks. The attempt to deny the axioms uses them. This is not a verbal trick. It is the recognition that awareness, as such, is awareness of something that is what it is.
Two features of this account matter for what follows. First, the axioms are validated by direct perceptual awareness, not by deduction from prior premises.[7] Second, Rand says almost nothing about the inner anatomy of that awareness. She notes that the senses operate by causal mechanisms and that perception unifies multimodal input. She does not describe the recurring spatial and motor patterns that make a scene parseable as a scene—containers, paths, links, fronts and backs, centers and edges. She does not say that the axioms themselves are, in their first appearance in a life, perceptual inductions: generalizations so early, so automatic, and so tightly bound to the conditions of being a functioning animal that they do not present themselves as generalizations at all.
Concepts as measurement-omission
Rand’s distinctive contribution is her theory of concept-formation. A concept is “a mental integration of two or more units possessing the same distinguishing characteristic(s), with their particular measurements omitted.”[8] Similarity is not an unanalyzable primitive. It is the relation among existents that share a characteristic in different measure or degree, grasped against a contrasting item that differs along the same dimension.[9] To form “table,” one isolates a shape-and-function cluster from chairs and beds, retains the relevant characteristic, and omits the particular measurements of size, exact contour, material, and color. The measurements are not treated as nonexistent. They must exist in some quantity and may exist in any quantity. The process, she insists, is in large part mathematical.[10]
Definitions complete the integration. The essence specified in a definition is epistemological, not a metaphysical form inhabiting each particular.[11] It is the characteristic that, within the present context of knowledge, explains the most and distinguishes the units from everything else so far identified. Words serve unit-economy: they let a mind hold an open-ended class as one mental unit. On this basis Rand claims to have answered the problem of universals without leaving reality for a separate realm of Forms and without reducing classes to arbitrary names.
This is a genuine achievement. It is also, as the title warns, an introduction. The subsequent Objectivist literature has clarified the theory, applied it to definition and proposition, and defended perceptual realism.[12] It has not produced a comparably detailed description of the structures by which a nervous system delivers a world of bounded objects, paths of motion, and part-whole assemblies in the first place. That description is what cognitive science, and Lakoff and Johnson in particular, have been writing.
III. The Gap in the Account of Perception
Rand’s metaphysics requires that the external world be available to consciousness as it is. Her epistemology requires that the first availability be perceptual. Between those two requirements sits a mechanism she names but does not analyze: the causal action of the world on a living body, and the integration of that action into a single experience.[13] Several consequences follow from leaving the mechanism thin.
First, the axiomatic concepts are described as omitting all particular measurements of all existents, retaining only a fundamental fact independent of any given moment.[14] That is correct as an account of the fully explicit concept. It does not explain why a nervous system finds it natural, long before explicit philosophy, to treat the world as a standing field of somethings rather than as a flicker of unrelated impressions. Rand notes that animals lack conceptual awareness and live in a comparatively discontinuous present.[15] She does not linger on what they do share with us: stable discriminations among kinds of food, kinds of threat, kinds of place, kinds of path. A squirrel that returns to an oak and not to a pine, that treats acorns and pinecones as food while registering that they differ in shape, scent, taste, and source, is already performing a perceptual induction. It is not forming the concept “nut” by measurement-omission and definition. It is using an evolved capacity to stabilize kinds across occasions. Human conceptual cognition grows out of that capacity; it does not replace a blank slate.
Second, Rand’s examples of first-level concepts—“table,” “chair,” “man”—are examples of what later psychology would call basic-level categories. She treats them as the products of a volitional conceptual method. She does not ask why those particular cuts in the world are the ones a child learns first, names fastest, and images most readily. An epistemology that begins with tables and chairs without asking why tables and chairs are easy has skipped a level.
Third, because Rand does not describe the spatial and motor scaffolding of perception, she cannot describe how that scaffolding is reused when thought leaves the immediately visible. The later claim that reason is a faculty of identifying and integrating the material provided by the senses is true and incomplete. It does not yet say in what forms the senses deliver their material, or how those forms persist as the analogical and inferential skeleton of abstract thought.
None of these omissions refutes her axioms. They specify a research program that her introduction opened and did not finish. Philosophy in the professional sense largely failed to finish it. Cognitive science did not.
IV. What Lakoff and Johnson Observed
Experience before concepts
Lakoff and Johnson start from a claim that looks, at first, like a rival to Rand’s: “Our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of which we both think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature.”[16] The force of the claim is easy to miss if “metaphor” is heard only as a literary device. They mean that large regions of abstract thought are systematically structured by mappings from domains we can see and handle—space, force, containment, motion—onto domains we cannot. Before those mappings, and beneath them, they place a layer they call preconceptual experience. That layer is not an ineffable blur. It has structure. And the structure is of two kinds.
Lakoff states the distinction with a clarity that matches the user’s formulation almost exactly. There are, he writes, at least two kinds of structure in our preconceptual experiences. One is basic-level structure: gestalt perception, the capacity for bodily movement, the ability to form rich mental images. The other is kinesthetic image-schematic structure: recurring patterns such as CONTAINER, PATH, LINK, FORCE, BALANCE, and the orientations UP-DOWN, FRONT-BACK, PART-WHOLE, CENTER-PERIPHERY.[17] Both are “directly meaningful.” They do not get their meaning by being defined in a language of necessary and sufficient conditions. They get it by being the forms in which a body of our kind encounters a world of our kind, over and over, because that is how such a body survives.
The basic level and the squirrel’s acorn
The basic level is the level at which an organism most naturally cuts the world. Experimental work by Eleanor Rosch, which Lakoff incorporates at length, showed that basic-level categories—chair, not furniture; dog, not mammal; acorn, not “reproductive structure of Quercus”—are learned earlier, recognized faster, and tied to a single characteristic shape and a characteristic set of actions.[18] A squirrel’s discrimination of acorn from pinecone is a basic-level achievement. The animal has something that functions as an image of each object, bound to scent, taste, handling, and the kind of tree that yields it. It generalizes: this shape-and-scent cluster means food; that one means food of another kind; leaves versus needles mark the source. The generalization is not a Randian concept. It has no word, no definition, no omitted-but-acknowledged measurements held as a policy of thought. It is a perceptual induction, and it is shared, in outline, with every animal that makes a living by sorting the environment into the edible, the dangerous, the passable, and the home.
Human beings do not abandon this level when they acquire language. They name it. Rand’s first-level concepts sit here. “Table” is easy not only because measurement-omission is a powerful method, but because tables are things of a characteristic size relative to the human body, with a characteristic top one can set things on, and a characteristic motor routine of approach, contact, and use. The method Rand described operates most fluently where evolution and bodily scale have already prepared a cut in the world. That is not a threat to her theory. It is an account of why the theory’s first examples work as well as they do.
Image schemas as the grammar of perception
Image schemas are more skeletal than basic-level images. They are not pictures of acorns. They are recurrent topological and force-dynamic patterns that organize many pictures and many actions.[19] A container has an interior, a boundary, and an exterior. A path has a source, a trajectory, and a goal. A link joins two entities. A part-whole assembly can be divided and reassembled. Center and periphery organize both a visual field and a social group. Up and down organize both posture and value. These patterns are “kinesthetic” because they are as much in movement and felt resistance as in vision. One knows what a container is by putting things in and taking them out, by being oneself a container of breath and food, by walking through doorways.
Lakoff’s Spatialization of Form Hypothesis makes the further claim that these same schemas structure concepts themselves: categories as containers, hierarchies as part-whole and up-down structures, relations as links, radial categories as center and periphery.[20] If that is right, then the logical operations Rand treats as conceptual achievements have a perceptual ancestry. To classify is, in one of its primitive appearances, to put something in. To define by genus and differentia is to place a part inside a whole and mark a boundary. To grasp identity across change is to track an entity along a path. None of this substitutes for measurement-omission. It names the forms within which measurement-omission can take hold.
Conceptual metaphor as projection from the bodily
On this foundation Lakoff and Johnson argue that metaphor is not an ornament of language but a systematic projection from source domains that are bodily and spatial onto target domains that are abstract.[21] ARGUMENT IS WAR is not a flourish. It is a mapping that licenses a field of inferences: positions can be defended, claims can be shot down, ground can be gained. TIME IS MONEY organizes wages, rents, and the ethics of punctuality. Orientational metaphors such as HAPPY IS UP and MORE IS UP are not arbitrary. They are motivated by the correlations of erect posture with well-being and of rising piles with increasing quantity.[22]
The theoretically important point is the mechanism of motivation. Primary metaphors, in the later development of the theory, arise from repeated co-occurrence in experience: warmth with affection, height with quantity, journeys with purposes.[23] The child who is held learns more than a feeling. It learns a correspondence that will later let “a warm welcome” be more than a dead idiom. Complex metaphors are compositions of these primaries. Abstract thought, on this view, is not a leap out of the body. It is the body reused.
Categories, finally, are often radial rather than classical. A central case anchors a network of extensions by similarity, metaphor, metonymy, and cultural chaining. The Dyirbal classifier system that gives Lakoff his title groups women, fire, and dangerous things not because they share a single hidden essence but because experience, myth, and salient property have linked them in a structured way.[24] This is the finding that most sharply challenges a naive reading of Rand, and it will have to be faced below. It does not, by itself, entail that classification is arbitrary. It entails that the structure of many human categories is richer than a single omitted measurement.
V. Two Realisms, Not One Polemic
Any honest comparison must register a collision of names. In the closing chapters of Metaphors We Live By, Lakoff and Johnson attack “objectivism.”[25] They mean a doctrine on which meaning is a relation between disembodied symbols and a world already carved into classical categories, independent of any species-specific body. They mean the idea that reason has no imaginative structure. They do not mean Ayn Rand, whom they do not discuss. Rand’s Objectivism is a metaphysics of mind-independent existence plus an epistemology of conceptual identification. It is not the generative linguist’s doctrine of innate, disembodied formal symbols. Conflating the two is a source of unearned victories on both sides.
Rand’s objectivity is methodological. It is “the volitional adherence of consciousness to reality by the method of logic.”[26] Concepts are neither revealed nor invented. They are produced by a consciousness in accordance with the facts.[27] Lakoff’s “experiential realism,” or embodied realism, agrees that there is a world independent of our understanding and denies that we have a God’s-eye view of it. Adequacy is adequacy for an embodied being with purposes in an environment.[28] The two realisms can be brought into conversation if one distinguishes the object of awareness from the means of awareness. Rand is right that existence is not constituted by consciousness. Lakoff and Johnson are right that the means by which existence is available to a human mind are the means of a particular kind of animal. Embodiment is a fact about the means. It does not swallow the object.
The same distinction disciplines the claim that abstract thought is “largely metaphorical.” If that claim means that every abstract identification is only a projection, with no residual grip on the target domain’s own structure, it is incompatible with Rand’s theory of definitions and with the axiomatic concepts themselves. Existence is not a metaphor for something else. If the claim means that the inferential scaffolding by which we explore abstract domains is very often borrowed from spatial and motor experience, it is an empirical specification of something Rand left open. One can hold that “cause” names a real relation in the world and still hold that human beings typically reason about causes with the help of FORCE and PATH schemas. The schema is the tool. The relation is the object.
VI. Axioms as Perceptual Inductions
The most consequential bridge is the one that is related to the axioms. The axioms are, in their first appearance, perceptual inductions. Rand already distinguishes the implicit from the explicit. An infant, and an animal, lives the fact that something is there; only a conceptual being identifies “existence” as such.[29] What can now be added is a description of the implicit stage that does not treat it as a mere lack.
To perceive at all is already to treat the field of awareness as occupied. That is the implicit concept of existence. To track an object as the same object while its retinal size, lighting, and angle change is already to treat a thing as what it is. That is the implicit concept of identity. To feel the difference between seeing and the seen, between reaching and the reached, is already to distinguish awareness from its object. That is the implicit concept of consciousness. These are not inferences from premises. They are stabilizations that a nervous system performs because a nervous system that did not perform them would not keep an organism alive. Higher animals share the first two almost entirely and share a functional analogue of the third. A squirrel does not philosophize about identity. It acts as if an acorn is an acorn whether it is in shadow or in sun, on the branch or on the ground.
Rand’s explicit axiomatic concepts then do something no squirrel does. They isolate those stabilizations, omit every particular measurement of every particular existent and every particular moment of awareness, and hold the residual fact as a single mental unit that can police every later thought. The evolutionary and image-schematic account does not replace that achievement. It explains why the achievement is possible and why the attempt to deny it is not merely false but unlivable. A theory that says “nothing exists” is not only stolen-concept reasoning. It is a theory that no functioning body can enact.
VII. Measurement-Omission and Preconceptual Structure
If the axioms can be read as explicit identifications of perceptual inductions, concept-formation more generally can be read as a further operation on the two kinds of preconceptual structure Lakoff describes.
Basic-level structure supplies the first units. Rand’s first-level concepts are formed directly from percepts.[30] Lakoff’s basic-level categories are the percepts that come already packed as gestalts with images and motor programs.[31] Measurement-omission then does what the basic level cannot do by itself: it opens the class. The particular table in this room has a height, a color, a number of legs. The concept “table” retains the need for some such measurements and drops the demand that they be these. That is Rand’s precise point, and nothing in prototype theory erases it.[32] What prototype theory adds is that the basic-level gestalt often continues to function as a cognitive center even after the class is opened. Typical tables remain easier to judge than edge cases. The theory of measurement-omission explains universality. The theory of the basic level explains typicality. An adequate epistemology needs both.
Image-schematic structure supplies the relations among units. Before one defines “in,” one lives in rooms, cups, and clothing.[33] The CONTAINER schema is not a concept of containment. It is the pattern that later concepts of containment, category membership, logical exclusion, and even personal privacy will reuse.[34] PATH structures “from,” “to,” “through,” and later “purpose,” “career,” and “argument.” PART-WHOLE structures both bodies and definitions. LINK structures both physical joining and causal and social connection. Rand observed that concepts are formed of entities, attributes, actions, and relationships. She did not inventory the relational primitives. Image-schema research is that inventory, compiled from language, developmental psychology, and the observation of action.
Metaphorical projection, on this reading, is one of the methods by which abstraction from abstractions proceeds. Rand described the hierarchy: first-level concepts formed from percepts, higher-level concepts formed from earlier concepts. She did not describe the systematic borrowing of inferential structure from a bodily source domain. That borrowing is not a substitute for definition. It is often the way a mind first finds its way around a domain it cannot yet define. “Love is a journey” does not define love. It lets a speaker reason about difficulty, common purpose, and possible separation with tools already sharpened on actual travel. An Objectivist epistemology that cares about how knowledge is acquired, and not only about how it is finally stated, has reason to take that method seriously.
VIII. Evolution, Survival, and the Primacy of Existence
Lakoff and Johnson insist that minds and bodies evolved together, and that the methods of awareness we have are the methods that were useful to creatures living in an environment.[35] The point can be stated without their vocabulary. A sensorimotor system is a device for keeping an organism in contact with the facts that can sustain or destroy it. Image schemas persist because they work. Basic-level cuts persist because they mark differences that matter to action. The axioms can be identified in philosophy because they were already being honored in biology.[36]
Rand did not write as an evolutionary psychologist, and she had reason to be wary of biological stories that smuggle determinism into ethics.[37] Nothing in the present argument requires that. Evolution explains the existence of a faculty. It does not dictate the particular identifications a volitional consciousness will form, and it does not excuse evasion. The primacy of existence is not revised by being given a natural history. If anything, the natural history makes the primacy more concrete. The world was there before there were nervous systems. Nervous systems are devices for being right about that world often enough to leave descendants. Conceptual consciousness is a further device, unique in degree, for being right on purpose.
This is why the squirrel belongs in an essay on human epistemology. The squirrel demonstrates that perceptual induction is older than philosophy and older than language. Human beings inherit that age. What they add is the ability to freeze an induction as a concept, to name it, to define it, to check it against further observations, and to build hierarchies that no particular image can hold. Rand described the addition. Lakoff and Johnson described the inheritance. The two descriptions fit.
IX. Where the Theories Pull Apart
Fit is not identity. Several tensions remain, and they should not be papered over.
The first is the structure of categories. Rand’s official examples behave classically once measurement-omission is in place: a unit either falls under a concept or it does not, though borderline cases can wait on further knowledge. Lakoff’s radial categories and prototype effects show that actual human classification often has graded membership, multiple centers, and chains that a single defining measurement will not reconstruct.[38] An Objectivist reply is available. One may say that prototype effects belong to the psychology of identification, not to the logic of concepts; that a well-formed concept can still be defined by essentials even if the mind first approaches it through a typical case; and that cultural chaining, as in Dyirbal, is a fact about some linguistic classifiers rather than a model of every scientific concept. The reply is not costless. It requires a distinction between the order of discovery and the order of validation that Rand began to draw and that later Objectivists have had to keep drawing.[39]
The second tension is truth. Lakoff and Johnson treat truth as relative to an embodied conceptual system.[40] Rand treats truth as the recognition of facts, with definitions themselves true or false as they track essentials.[41] Embodied realism can be read as a theory of access—how a body-bound mind reaches facts—rather than as a theory that facts are internal to a scheme. Read that way, it is compatible with correspondence. Read as the claim that there is no fact of the matter beyond a scheme, it is not. The axiomatic concepts are the test. If “existence exists” is only true-for-an-embodied-scheme, the stolen-concept argument has been declined, not answered.[42]
The third tension is the scope of metaphor. If abstract thought is largely metaphorical in the strong sense, then the concept of concept, the concept of measurement, and the concept of identity would themselves be metaphorical, and the theory would undercut the literal identifications it uses to state itself. Lakoff and Johnson are aware of self-applicability and treat their own account as a model, not a view from nowhere. An Objectivist reconstruction should be stricter. It should treat image schemas and primary metaphors as the vehicles of much abstract reasoning and treat at least the axiomatic concepts, the first-level identifications of perceived entities, and the formal operations of logic as capable of literal success. That restriction is not a refusal of evidence. It is a refusal to let a method of exploration become the only form of knowledge.[43]
The fourth tension is political and moral, and it lies mostly offstage in the three books under discussion. Lakoff’s later work on moral politics uses the same toolkit to argue that political worldviews are metaphorical family models. Rand’s ethics treats reason as a volitional virtue and politics as a consequence of moral principles. Nothing in image-schema research decides that dispute. It does suggest that moral and political abstractions, whatever their status, will be learned and spoken with the same bodily scaffolding as the rest of abstract thought. An epistemology that ignores that fact will misunderstand its own transmission.
X. What Lies Beyond the Introduction
If the comparison is sound, Objectivist epistemology can be developed past its introduction along lines that Rand’s own commitments recommend.
The primacy of existence remains first philosophy. Consciousness is consciousness of an independent world. The body is in that world and is one of the existents consciousness can identify, including when it identifies its own means.[44] An evolutionary and embodied account of those means is therefore not a rival metaphysics. It is metaphysics applied to a particular kind of existent.
The theory of concepts can keep measurement-omission as the operation that opens a class, and it can add an account of the units on which the operation is first performed. Those units arrive already shaped by gestalt perception, motor routine, and image-schematic relation. First-level concepts are the naming of basic-level structure. Higher-level concepts include both abstraction from abstractions, as Rand described, and metaphorical projection, as Lakoff and Johnson described.[45] Definitions remain the tool of cognitive control. Image schemas and metaphors remain the tools of cognitive exploration. Confusing the two is a source of both sterile formalism and unmoored analogy.
The theory of perception can finally be written in a vocabulary adequate to its object. Perception is not a mosaic of atomic sensations later glued by concepts. It is an already structured contact with entities, paths, containers, forces, and assemblies. That structure is causal, species-specific, and world-involving. Illusions remain misidentifications, just as Rand held. They are possible because a structured system can be stimulated in nonstandard ways, not because the senses invent a private theater. Direct realism survives. It becomes a realism about a world encountered by a body.[46]
The theory of the axioms can acknowledge their double life. Implicitly, they are perceptual inductions, evolved, shared with higher animals, enacted in every competent movement. Explicitly, they are concepts formed by omitting all particular measurements and retained as the guardians of later thought. Philosophy begins at the second stage. It is answerable to the first.
None of this is already present, fully worked, in the Objectivist corpus. That is the point of calling Rand’s book an introduction.[47] The curiosity that asks what lies beyond it is not disloyalty to her axioms. It is obedience to them. Existence includes the existence of evolved perceptual systems. Identity includes the identity of those systems. Consciousness includes the obligation to identify them as they are. Lakoff and Johnson, working independently and sometimes under a banner that sounds hostile, have identified a large tract of that territory. The tract can be claimed for a realism that still says the world is not a metaphor.
XI. Conclusion
Rand showed that knowledge begins in direct awareness and that concepts are objective when they are formed by a method answerable to the measurements of real things. She showed that the axioms are inescapable because they are implicit in the act of awareness itself. She left the structure of that awareness, and the deep history of the animal that possesses it, in outline.
Lakoff and Johnson showed that preconceptual experience is already formed, in two ways: as basic-level images bound to action, and as kinesthetic image schemas bound to the body’s orientations and forces. They showed that abstract thought systematically reuses those forms. They showed that this reuse is not a defect of language but a consequence of having the bodies we have, in the world we have. They did not show, and did not need to show, that existence is a projection.
Read together, the three books describe a single arc. A living body, sharing with other animals the power of perceptual induction, encounters a world of entities, paths, and containers. A human consciousness identifies that encounter, omits particular measurements, and forms concepts. Some of those concepts name the entities themselves. Some name relations first lived as schemas. Some explore domains that can be reached only by mapping the bodily onto the not-yet-visible. At every point the standard of success is the same: does the identification track what exists? The methods are more numerous than Rand listed. The standard is the one she named.
What lies beyond the introduction is not a different philosophy. It is the same philosophy, supplied at last with a description of the perceptual and bodily conditions that make philosophy possible. The squirrel already knows, in the only way a squirrel needs to know, that an acorn is not a pinecone. The task of epistemology is to explain how a mind like ours can know that, and everything that follows from it, in a form that can be stated, checked, and taught. Rand began that explanation. Cognitive science has been writing the next chapters, whether or not it has read her. It is time the two literatures were read together.[48][49][50]
